VIC:Palmer lets fly on coal seam gas

Billionaire miner CLIVE PALMER has lashed out at the coal seam gas industry saying
it could harm the environment.

PALMER is Queensland's richest man and intends to oversee a multi-billion dollar expansion
in that state's Galilee thermal coal basin.

Speaking at the National Party's Federal Council in Canberra, Mr PALMER said concerns
had been raised about the impact of Australia's fledgling coal seam gas industry.

According to the ABC, Mr PALMER says overseas companies are concerned that the people
extracting coal seam gas in Australia aren't as skilled and risk contaminating the water
table with arsenic and other carcinogens if they don't get it right.

Security Service Federal Credit Union Selects DocuSign Electronic Signature Service
Type: News

DocuSign, a provider of electronic signatures, announced that Security Service Federal Credit Union has selected DocuSign's electronic signature service as the final leg in its online account acquisition process.

According to a release, SSFCU anticipates the DocuSign service will be fully implemented for member use in the first quarter of 2011.
"DocuSign provided the best solution for us to achieve greater efficiencies while providing a positive member experience," said Aaron Leek, vice president for online services at SSFCU. "We thoroughly vetted DocuSign and concluded that it led in best practices. DocuSign offered the best method for our members to quickly, easily and securely sign online. DocuSign has helped us provide additional services to our members while reducing costs enterprise-wide."

Previously, SSFCU members opening accounts online could not complete the process electronically as there was no mechanism in place to capture the member's signature. With DocuSign, SSFCU members can complete and electronically sign new account forms from Internet-connected devices.

SSFCU added DocuSign's optional ID Check authentication feature, provided through RSA, a provider of identity verification. DocuSign ID Check is a knowledge-based authentication method that validates the identity of a signer. Results of DocuSign ID Check authentication are recorded securely as part of the signing record.

Security Service Federal Credit Union offers financial products and services to members in Texas, Colorado, and Utah.

DocuSign is the electronic signature cloud platform provider.

VIC:Driver jailed for killing grandfather

The widow of a Melbourne grandfather killed by a speeding drink driver says she's insulted
that his killer could walk free from prison in three years.

25-year old MATTHEW OWEN WOODCOCK had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.139 and was
travelling at 130 kilometres an hour in an 80 zone when he slammed into pedestrian DAVID
JESSOPP in February this year.

WOODCOCK was jailed for five years in the Victorian County Court today .. but could
walk free after serving his three-year non-parole period.

Mr JESSOPP'S widow JACQUELINE burst into tears and stormed out of court .. telling
reporters the judge had placed too much emphasis on WOODCOCK rather than his victim.

Fed: Wallabies star faces burglary charge

The Australian Rugby Union says it'll make a decision on the future of Wallabies star
QUADE COOPER before he's due to return to training with Queensland next month.

The 21-year-old Test and Queensland centre briefly appeared in Southport Magistrates
Court today charged with one count of burglary in Surfers Paradise on December 6.

The case was adjourned for a committal hearing in July next year.

COOPER told reporters outside court he hoped the proceedings wouldn't exclude him from
his playing duties.

The ARU and Queensland Rugby Union are waiting to receive more information about the
night of the alleged burglary and they'll make a decision by mid-January.

Qld: Ethics scandals to make for fiery sitting of parliament

By Gabrielle Dunlevy

BRISBANE, Aug 3 AAP - Queensland MPs return to the parliamentary chamber on Tuesday
for the first time since the June budget session after a week of scandals ending with
Premier Anna Bligh's popularity plummeting to 33 per cent.

But the government has managed to turn the tables on the opposition.

The Bligh government has suffered several blows to its credibility with both current
and former Labor MPs found to have questionable links to lobbyists and property developments.

These came on top of a troubling Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) report into
police misconduct and an unflattering speech by 1980s corruption reformer Tony Fitzgerald.

A Galaxy poll for The Sunday Mail newspaper found 65 per cent of people believed corruption
and cronyism were widespread in the Bligh government, and gave the Liberal National Party
(LNP) a 59-41 per cent lead on a two-party preferred basis.

However, the LNP will start the parliamentary week on the back foot, so far declining
to match the Labor leader's ban on fundraisers with businesspeople.

The premier upped the ante on Monday, releasing a list of businesses represented at
Labor's state conference this year, and calling on the LNP to do the same by the day's
end.

Opposition Leader John-Paul Langbroek has also been criticised for seeking taxpayer
funds for up to 15 billboards that feature mainly his picture and the words "Strong Alternative
Government to protect our Queensland Way of Life".

QLD: Premier orders mozzie repellent roll-out

AAP General News (Australia)

QLD: Premier orders mozzie repellent roll-out

BRISBANE, Feb 1 AAP - Premier Anna Bligh has ordered a mozzie repellent roll-out in
north Queensland to fight the dengue fever epidemic.

The state government will hand out free insect repellent this week to all schools in
Cairns and Townsville, where the outbreak has affected more than 250 people.

The premier says teachers and staff at more than 90 state and private schools will
also be given the repellent.

"This is an unprecedented move for a Queensland government but if it prevents one child
from contracting this disease then it will have been worthwhile," said Ms Bligh.

"I can assure parents that an appropriate product for children has been selected, in
consultation with experts.

"Parents will be provided with information about this important public health initiative
prior to its roll-out later this week and given the option to opt out," she said.

Ms Bligh says the government is starting a new TV ad blitz on Sunday in the region
to back up a radio campaign already under way.

Health Minister Stephen Robertson said spot checks of North Queensland households showed
mosquito breeding sites are still common, particularly in suburban backyards.

"We particularly need to break the myth that the dengue mozzie breeds in rivers when
in actual fact it breeds in your backyard and home, and is active during the day," he
said.

"To date there have been 226 cases confirmed in Cairns and 31 cases in Townsville,
including several babies and young children.

"This underscores the seriousness of the outbreak and while the situation in Townsville
is not as critical as it is in Cairns, we have to knock it on the head now," Mr Robertson
said.

BRISBANE, Aug 22 AAP - The Queensland government will today unveil how it plans to

FED: Bowen calls on Nelson to back FuelWatch or form own scheme

FED: Bowen calls on Nelson to back FuelWatch or form own scheme

SYDNEY, April 16 AAP - The federal government has called on the opposition to back
the national FuelWatch scheme or form its own plan to deliver lower petrol prices.

Competition Policy Minister Chris Bowen defended the scheme today amid criticism from
the opposition and motoring groups, saying FuelWatch might not be a "silver bullet" solution
but would deliver savings for motorists.

FuelWatch, announced yesterday, will force petrol stations to publish their prices
for the following 24-hour period at 2pm each day, in a bid to give motorists more choice.

It is similar to a scheme already operating in Western Australia, and a report from
the competition watchdog has said it could shave two cents a litre off the price of petrol.

Federal Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson has criticised the scheme, saying people who
currently buy fuel on Tuesdays, when prices are normally lower, will be worse off under
FuelWatch.

Mr Bowen told reporters he was disappointed the opposition had moved so quickly to
dismiss FuelWatch.

"There always will be cheaper days to buy petrol (under the scheme)," he said.

"Either Mr (opposition competition spokesman Peter) Dutton and Dr Nelson need to produce
their plan to reduce petrol prices to introduce competition, or they need to back ours,"

he said.

"They need to give Australian motorists certainty that this scheme will pass the Australian
parliament with their support. Without their support it will be much harder to get it
through the Senate."

Fed: Inutero smoking boosts asthma risk, but only in girls

Australian researchers have found teenage girls whose mothers smoked heavily in pregnancy
.. are twice as likely to have asthma as those with mums who didn't smoke.

But the study of almost 4000 children .. followed since before their births in the
early 1980s .. found no such link for boys.

ROSA ALATI .. who conducted the research with colleagues at the University of Queensland
.. says the reasons for the gender difference are unclear.

But the earlier onset of puberty in girls or their smaller lung size may be possible
explanations.

Fed: Govt unveils city list for remote indigenous training program

Fed: Govt unveils city list for remote indigenous training program

By Darrin Barnett

CANBERRA, Dec 15 AAP - Nine Australian cities will take part in a federal program to
provide training and employment for young Aborigines from remote communities.

The Indigenous Youth Mobility Program allows 600 young people to relocate to major
regional centres and train for new careers through pre-vocational training, apprenticeships
or tertiary education.

The providers will be based in Cairns, Townsville, Toowoomba, Newcastle, Dubbo, Canberra,
Shepparton, Perth and Darwin.

Education Minister Brendan Nelson said the $24 million program was essential in ensuring
that indigenous youth from remote Australia receive training and employment opportunities.

"The training opportunities could lead to occupations in high demand throughout our
remote Australian communities, such as trades, nursing, accountancy, business management
and teaching," Dr Nelson said.

"Participants may choose to return to their own communities to take up skilled jobs
that are often filled by non-indigenous workers, or pursue their careers elsewhere."

Participants will be backed up by a support network, including accommodation, mentors,
training and help in keeping contact with their own communities.

Meanwhile, Australia's financial watchdog today released a booklet warning indigenous
communities of the dangers of leaving their PIN and credit card details with retailers.

Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) Northern Territory regional
commissioner Anthony Beven said the process - known as `book-up' - had many inherent risks.

He said it could leave people tied to one store and lead to excessive debt and extra
fees and charges.

Book-up is widely used by Aboriginal people, especially in regional and remote areas.

"ASIC hopes this guide will be a useful resource for community workers, financial counsellors,
consumer affairs, fair trading officers and anyone else helping Aboriginal communities
to deal with book-up problems," Mr Beven said.

The guide contains case studies highlighting what communities have done to control
or eliminate book-up, suggestions for alternative ways of managing money, and legal information.

Fed: Sheikh takes out annual award for sexist comments

By Vera Devai

SYDNEY, Aug 12 AAP - It's the annual gong that's determined by how loud the crowd boos,
and there was plenty to boo about at this year's Ernie Awards.

Now in its 13th year, the Ernies are bestowed on those whose public utterings are regarded
as the most sexist.

Four hundred women who attended the gala event at NSW Parliament House last night decided
that comments by a Sydney sheikh, who said rape victims had only themselves to blame,
were outstandingly sexist.

The audience decided Sydney-born Sheikh Feiz Mohammad, of the Global Islamic Youth
Centre in Liverpool, should take out this year's top prizes, the Gold Ernie, and the Silver
Ernie.

The sheikh shot to notoriety after delivering a speech at the Bankstown Town Hall in
March, telling the audience a rape victim has "no one to blame but herself".

Women teased men and appealed to their "carnal nature" by the way they dressed in "nothing
but satanic skirts", the sheikh told the crowd.

NSW Legislative Council president and Ernies organiser, Meredith Burgmann, said the
sheikh was a worthy winner because "anything that suggests rape victims brought it on
themselves is always going to anger women greatly".

The most hostile response at the awards is often reserved for the winner of the Elaine
- the woman whose remarks were regarded as "the least helpful to the sisterhood".

This year the Elaine went to Australian author Colleen McCullough who, when commenting
on the Pitcairn Island rape trials, said: "They are as much Polynesian as anything. It's
Polynesian to break your girls in at 12."

Federal Education Minister Brendan Nelson took out the political Ernie for his sarcastic
response to fears that university services might disappear under voluntary student unionism.

"If they can afford to pay their academics nine months' maternity leave and if child
care needs subsidising on campus, I would be most surprised if they weren't prepared to
subsidise that in some way," Dr Nelson said.

The justice Ernie went to the president of the NSW Bar Association, Ian Harrison, SC.

When cross examining a teenage girl who had allegedly been pack-raped, he suggested
that "to sit on a bar stool with a skirt as short as that takes a lot of confidence".

The Ernie Awards are named in honour of former Labor Council president Ernie Ecob,
who was known for his sexist remarks.

Microsoft Trades its Travel Agency for $1.5 Billion Stake in Home Shopping Network's Parent.(Microsoft selling two-thirds ownership in Expedia to USA Networks)(Company Business and Marketing)

Microsoft is selling its two-thirds ownership in online travel agency Expedia to USA Networks in a $1.5 billion deal that will turn USA Networks into the world's largest online travel company.

Redmond IPO'd Expedia in 1999, retaining majority control.

USA Networks, which owns the Home Shopping Network (HSN), its own USA Network and the Hotel Reservation Network, said that it's also buying online cruise and vacation package company National Leisure Group.

When the dust settles USA Networks' combined travel holdings are expected to do about $4 billion in bookings this year, a better than 30% market share.

At least that's the optimistic view of the deal.

Pessimists said Microsoft is departing the online travel business in the face of competition by the major airlines to sell their tickets over the Internet directly to consumers. The airlines have set up sites that compete directly with Expedia to save the commissions they pay Expedia and conventional travel agents.

By selling its interest to USA Networks Microsoft gets a stake, albeit far smaller, in a more diversified operation that isn't totally dependent on travel sales for its survival. USA Networks' various units sell everything from TVs to concert tickets.

Microsoft will get 3%-5% of USA Networks. The exact percentage depends on how many shares are tendered by other shareholders. They are being offered the same terms as Microsoft.

USA Networks said that it's willing to buy up to 75% of all the outstanding Expedia shares. The amount it buys from Microsoft and others will be pro-rated if more than 75% of the shares are tendered.

The terms of the USA Network tender offers Expedia shareholders a combination of common shares, preferred shares and warrants.

Shareholders will get $17.50 worth of USA common stock, or 0.5645 to 0.7609 shares, for each Expedia share. The exact conversion formula is based on a collar of $23-$31 per USA share.

Microsoft owns 33.7 million shares and warrants, which means the USA shares it gets will be worth about $590 million.

In addition Expedia shareholders will get 0.35 shares of convertible redeemable preferred stock with a face value of $50. For Microsoft that's worth another $590 million.

Finally, USA Networks will issue between 0.3873 and 0.4524 of a seven-year warrant to buy USA common stock at $35.10 a share for each Expedia share. Assuming a USA share price of $27 the exchange rate will be 0.4176 and Microsoft's exercise price will be $494 million.

Microsoft's piece of the deal includes an agreement to position Expedia as MSN's primary travel partner for at least the next four years.

USA shares jumped from $25 to just over $27 immediately after the deal was announced Monday.

THE ANSWER GUY.(Sports)

Q: Why is the .200 batting average referred to as ``the Mendoza line?''

AG: The term pays homage to Mario Mendoza, a weak-hitting shortstop for the Mariners, Pirates and Rangers. Mendoza's lifetime batting average of .215 was orginally referred to as the Mendoza line, but the more common usage currently is to refer to .200 as the Mendoza line. The orginator of the term, according to ``Rotisserie League Baseball,'' was heavy-hitting George Brett, who is said to have remarked, ``The first thing I look for in the Sunday papers is who is below the Mendoza line.''

Q: If a batter is walked, it is not counted as an at-bat. So if a batter is walked with the bases loaded, how can the batter be credited with an RBI if his at-bat did not count?

AG: For the same reason that a batter who sacrifices a runner home receives an RBI, even though a sacrifice does not count as an at-bat either. The rationale is that the batter's action at the plate - whether a walk or a sacrifice - is what caused the run to score. So he receives an RBI. Baseball, despite its sometimes-confusing idiosyncracies, usually makes sense.

Q: The Mariners have a large banner in the Kingdome advertising the internet address of their web page (www.mariners.org). But there must be a mistake - ``.org'' is supposed to be used by non-profit organizations. Shouldn't the Mariners' web address be www.mariners.com, since ``.com'' is used by businesses, including all other major league teams? Or are the M's a non-profit?

AG: To the M's ownership, the team probably seems like a non-profit, what with all its oozing red ink. The M's aren't a non-profit, but their web page does indeed belong at ``.org.'' The reason is: The M's were the first pro sports team to go online, back in November 1994 when web addresses were not quite as defined as they are now; they were assigned ``.org'' at that time. No tears should be shed over the M's being lost in cyberspace. Their web site, according to team officials, averages 7 million hits a month.

And the Mariners could not switch now to www.mariners.com, even if they wanted to. That web site is owned by Cardiac Mariners Inc. of Los Gatos, Calif. That firm, which sounds as if it rents sailboats to people with heart problems, is actually a high tech medical start-up company.
